In spring 2018, Folkoperan presents Salieri vs Mozart starring Loa Falkman as composer Antonio Salieri. Tobias Theorell directs a unique composition of the two one-act operas Mozart and Salieri by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Prima la musica e poi le parole by Antonio Salieri. In the role of Eleonora we see royal court singer Hillevi Martinpelto. Premiere 14 February.
In spring 2018, Folkoperan gives these two operas in one, where Salieri's opera Prima la musica e poi le parole is interleaved with Rimsky-Korsakov's Mozart and Salieri. Jonas Forssell is behind the idea and musical arrangement. The set designer and costume designer is Agnes Östergren while Tobias Theorell is the director.
“It is very exciting to be the first to bring these two different works together. The combination of them describes every aspect of the creation process. Playfulness, joy, collective creativity, but also loneliness and jealousy. It will be both hard and easy.” Says director Tobias Theorell.
“I am delighted that we are making a first performance with giants like Loa Falkman and Hillevi Martinpelto. And this in the hands of Tobias Theorell will be very interesting.” Says Mellika Melouani Melani, artistic director of Folkoperan.
Tobias Theorell is an actor and theatre and opera director. He has worked at venues such as the Royal Dramatic Theatre, Kulturhuset Stadsteatern, Gothenburg City Theatre and Uppsala City Theatre. As an opera director, he has staged A Masked Ball and Stiffelio at the Royal Swedish Opera, Peter Grimes at NorrlandsOperan and Madame Butterfly at Opera Hedeland.
Mozart and Salieri was written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1897, based on Alexander Pushkin's 1830 verse drama. It follows the relationship between composers Antonio Salieri and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, built on creativity and jealousy and culminating in death by poison.
Prima la musica e poi le parole (First the music and then the words) by Antonio Salieri to a libretto by Giovanni Battista Casti was first performed in 1786 in Vienna and debates the importance of music and drama in opera.
Salieri vs Mozart premieres 14 February 2018 and runs all spring.
